South of Midnight: Can the Creators of We Happy Few Shine at TGA?

The new game from Compulsion Games is not far from release if rumors are to be believed… but what exactly can we expect?

South of Midnight was announced by Microsoft at the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase 2023 in June. The developers of Contrast and We Happy Few are working on a third-person action-adventure set in the southern United States, but in a gothic fantasy version inspired by local folk tales. Our main character is Hazel, and after her hometown of Prospero is destroyed by a hurricane, she is forced to become a Weaver, a magical healer of broken ties and spirits. Armed with these skills, she must fight off dangerous creatures to save her mother, but in the process, she also learns about her family’s past and may find a new home.

According to a Spanish insider, eXtas1s, South of Midnight will be shown at this year’s The Game Awards, so next week, and is scheduled for release in March. He believes that the Redmond-based company will not have a strong presence at the event this time. By harnessing our ancient powers, we will be able to restore the creatures and find out what traumas they are dealing with. You can use Weaving Magic to battle the destructive Haint, explore the diverse landscape, and reweave the tears of the great tapestry. As you explore the lush yet decaying county of Prospero and its inhabitants, you will experience an artistic stop-motion visual style, not to mention a haunting story and musical score inspired by the complex and rich history of the southern United States.

Compulsion Games has previously confirmed that it has focused on storytelling rather than combat in the game, which takes around 12 hours to play through. This is relatively short compared to other titles in the genre, but in return the performance could be good, as the studio has promised a 60 FPS frame rate on both Xbox Series.

South of Midnight, using Unreal Engine 5, will be released for PC and Xbox Series possibly in March, but it’s not official yet!

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
