The French publisher announced the project almost a year and a half ago, and opened up registration at the same time.

A few weeks later, insider Tom Henderson leaked more details. So we have four types of characters (Attacker, Defender, Medic, Support), each with their own unique abilities. The goal is for the team to work together to get to the center of the map by completing a series of tasks (occupying areas, defending targets, and defeating AI-controlled enemies). Henderson wrote at the time that Project U would not use Ubisoft’s own Anvil or Snowdrop engines, but an open-source technology called the Godot engine.

Now, in a new statement, the Yves Guillemot-led publisher has reminded us that Project U is alive and well, and will be running a closed test for PCs in both North American and European regions via Ubisoft Connect from February 1 to February 6. The short description officially reads: “A new kind of massive co-op shooter: Codename “Project U” is a new kind of session-based cooperative shooter where players unite in massive battles against overwhelming legions of machines.

Just don’t let it go the way of Hyper Scape (who remembers that one?).
