‘James Bond’ Reboot: A Superhero Star Steps Up for the 007 Role

MOVIE NEWS – Amazon’s eagerly awaited James Bond reboot is progressing better than most expected, especially after the studio and streamer’s bold takeover of the legendary franchise. With Dune director Denis Villeneuve behind the camera and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight on script duty, fans are still waiting to learn who will become the next 007. Now, a superhero star has thrown his hat into the ring…

The current frontrunners for the James Bond role remain Aaron Taylor-Johnson (28 Years Later), Theo James (The Gentlemen), and former Superman Henry Cavill. Rumor has it that Amazon’s own shortlist includes Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Jacob Elordi (Euphoria, Frankenstein), and Harris Dickinson (Babygirl, The King’s Man). But nothing is certain yet, especially now that Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf) has tossed his name in the ring, calling 007 “the pinnacle goal.”

While promoting the Prime Video action-thriller spinoff The Terminal List: Dark Wolf on Andy Cohen Live, Hopper was told he’s “appearing on lists for the next James Bond.” Even if he’s not a top favorite, Hopper said: “The thing is, James Bond for any British actor is like the pinnacle goal, you know, so to even be in a list to be considered, I find that an honor in itself really, so yeah. If the call ever comes, I’ll have a conversation.”

Is Tom Hopper the Right Fit for 007?

Tom Hopper is best known as Luther Hargreeves (Number One) in the offbeat Netflix superhero hit The Umbrella Academy. He starred as the team leader in an all-star cast until the acclaimed show wrapped up last year. Hopper’s also appeared in Game of Thrones, Terminator: Dark Fate, Black Sails, and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

But would he make the right James Bond? Hopper certainly looks the part and thrives in action roles, but his towering 6’4” frame could turn 007 into Britain’s answer to Jack Reacher. His next role is practically a Bond audition: he’ll star alongside Taylor Kitsch and Chris Pratt in the upcoming The Terminal List: Dark Wolf. Hopper plays US Navy SEAL Lieutenant Raife Hastings, with Kitsch as Ben Edwards and Pratt as James Reece. The spinoff series lands on Prime Video August 27, 2025. Here’s the official synopsis:

“Co-created by The New York Times bestselling author of The Terminal List, Jack Carr, and Season One creator-showrunner David DiGilio, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf is a prequel series with an origin story that follows ‘Ben Edwards’ (Taylor Kitsch) throughout his journey from the Navy SEALs to the clandestine side of CIA Special Operations. The series is an espionage thriller that explores the darker side of warfare and the human cost that comes with it. It also features Chris Pratt reprising his role as ‘James Reece.’”
