The next game from Compulsion Games (We Happy Few) won’t take years to tell the story, because the events will take place in a very short time!
Jasmin Roy, the gameplay director of South of Midnight, spoke to GamesRadar+ about the studio’s upcoming game. She revealed that it will take about 10-12 hours to play through, as the story will take place over one day. South of Midnight will have 14 chapters, and the sense of urgency will not be left out of our protagonist Hazel’s story. It’s going to be a bigger game than the studio originally planned, but maybe not one we can’t wait to see finished.
Several environments will be explored in the game, and they will have different atmospheres and moods. This was revealed by Compulsion Games in a 30-minute documentary released last year, in which we learned that the developers want to pay homage to the South of the United States and also try to balance the themes that will appear in the game. Four different biomes are featured in the video (embedded below). There are the Swamps, the Delta, the Appalachian Mountains, and an area inspired by the New Orleans area. Considering the length of the game (and the fact that the story only covers one day), Hazel will probably move pretty fast…
According to art director Whitney Clayton, South of Midnight will be a linear title with small exploration opportunities in each section and will feature several different locations in the Deep South. Our adventure will begin in the morning and end at midnight. It was also revealed in the GamesRadar+ interview that South of Midnight took five years to design and develop, as they reverse-engineered the world in 3D and did a lot of research and planning, and prototyping was not left out of that half-decade. Roy says that most of the game has come together in the last three years.
South of Midnight will be released on April 8 for the Xbox Series and PC, and will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.
