Rocksteady’s live service game is the Titanic of the gaming industry, as it raised high hopes for publisher Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), but the ship is simply sinking.
Looking at the last three months of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League on SteamDB, we see a gradual downward trend in concurrent players. In March it was 2700, by the end of April it was down to 170 (!!!). May saw the launch of the first season, which brought in some viewers as it went up to 500, but now we’re back to seeing numbers around 200. The same can be said for WBD’s previous big hit, Gotham Knights. This game was not made by Rocksteady, but by Warner Bros. Montréal.
Both studios are best known for Batman: Arkham. WB Montréal is known for Batman: Arkham Origins, Rocksteady for Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Knight. But the Suicide Squad game is not only out for PC, but also for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, so it’s a multiplatform title, and may have a bigger audience on consoles (where they don’t force Denuvo DRM down gamers’ throats), and on PC it’s also available on the Epic Games Store.
Regardless, the fact remains: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a $200 million loss for WBD, and the game is no longer getting weekly news posts from Rocksteady, which stopped doing them on May 31st. The Discord dedicated to the game is also barely alive. Someone asked me if it was a good idea to return to Suicide Squad, and the answers were “simple answer is no”, “enjoy the ride until it’s over”. So people are already burying it, and maybe rightly so.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will soon have an offline mode, but we think it will only be truly offline when you don’t have to connect to the internet because of some DRM…
