While Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second installment in the remake trilogy, has been officially announced by Square Enix to be released on two Blu-ray discs, we hadn’t heard that the latest main title in the franchise would be released in the same way…
First, Square Enix has released a new advertisement for Final Fantasy XVI. In it, the characters and the game world are depicted in a painting style. But in addition to that, there was more news in the live broadcast celebrating the game, which the Japanese company organized before the launch. From June 19, Final Fantasy XVI will also appear on digital billboards in Shibuya, Osaka, and Fukuoka, plus a special 3D ad on the Cross Shinjuku Vision billboard in Japan.
Square Enix has previously committed to releasing Final Fantasy XVI without needing a day-1 patch. It has partially delivered on its promise because there will be such an update, but not one that requires 20-40 gigabytes of data to download. Nowadays, an update of around 300 megabytes is not that big of a deal. Under certain circumstances, the game will softlock (no progression) and be fixed, as will the sudden game closure issue. There are several performance optimizations (and there could be a better frame rate later on), and some text bugs were fixed.
The game’s producer, Naoki Yoshida, aka Yoshi-P, also revealed that Final Fantasy XVI was originally planned for a two-disc release. Still, around December last year, the developers saw that they could cram everything onto one disc, saving themselves the increased production costs and the premature mastering (necessary for production). They could just about squeeze all the data onto a single Blu-ray disc!
Final Fantasy XVI demo is available now on PlayStation Network, with the full game coming to PlayStation 5 on June 22.
