TV Asahi, une chaîne de télévision japonaise, a réalisé une sondage, et le goût de cinquante mille joueurs japonais pour le jeu ont abouti à la création d’un top 100, mené par un titre relativement récent.
Le podium comprend trois jeux développés au Japon. The Legend of Zelda (qui figure sur la liste avec plusieurs titres de la franchise) a remporté la victoire avec le titre actuel, Breath of the Wild (dont la suite est en développement). Il est suivi de Dragon Quest V (Super Famicom : 1992, PlayStation 2 : 2004, Nintendo DS : 2008, avec la première version occidentale en 2009, Android/iOS : 2014/2015), et la troisième place revient à Final Fantasy VII, prouvant à quel point le titre PS1 de 1997 a en effet propulsé la franchise dans le grand public dans le monde entier. (Et Square Enix a deux jeux sur le podium, car Dragon Quest est une autre franchise entre leurs mains.)
Il faudrait descendre à la 13e place pour trouver un match occidental. Undertale est tout sauf japonais (ou AAA). Mais allons plus loin… la première exclusivité PlayStation, plus importante et développée en Occident, se trouve dans #66 (Ghost of Tsushima). La Nintendo Switch a pris quatre places dans le top 10, faisant pencher les résultats en faveur de Nintendo (Chrono Trigger ? SNES, puis PS1 ; SMB3 ? NES… portant le nombre à six, mais même les développements internes, 1, 4, 5, 7 et 10, amener le ratio à 50 %).
